Syed Ahmad Khan death anniversary
The death anniversary of Syed Ahmad Khan, popularly known as ‘Sir Syed,’ was commemorated on 27 March. Dr Rahat Abrar of the AMU takes a close look at the life and career of the giant who brought Indian Muslims closer to modern education.
The death of Sir Syed was viewed as a colossal intellectual loss and many international newspapers published editorials and obituaries. The London Times deeply mourned his death in an April 1889 editorial:
‘India loses one who has been described as its most prominent Mohamedan since the death of the great Sir Salar Jung. For nearly 50 years, and especially since the Mutiny, Sir Syed has stood as an interpreter between the Mohamedans of India and their rulers, as well as a between them and the British people. He was ever ready to defend his co-religionists from literary attacks upon them, and our own columns,as well as the paces of some of the leading English Magazines, have borne witness to his learning and his dialectical skill when defending his own people.
‘For many years past Sir Syed home at Aligarh has been the goal of the pilgrimages of many of the greatest personages in India, and his recepting by his fellow-Mohamedans when he has on to the Punjab or to Hyderabad has been semi-regal.His last years were wholly devoted to the prosperity of his college and institute, and most of his journeys have been made on their behalf.’
Khawaja Altaf Husain Hali had written on the sad demise of Sir Syed in his famous book Hayat-e-Javed
On the morning of 27th of March 1898 Sir Syed has a severe headache,a sign that uric acid had entered the bloodstream and was affecting his brain.By evening he had a high fever and before sinking into delirium recited over and over again the two verses of the Holy Qur'an.The agony lasted just three hours and he passed away at ten o'clock in the house of Haji Ismail Khan, where he had moved about a fortnight before from the house of Justice Sayed Mahmud (presently Sir Syed House).
The body was taken up for burial the next day at five thirty in the afternoon( 28th December 1898 ) The funeral procession was joined by the whole staff of the College, the students, the European and Indian Officers and staff of the station, the nobles of Aligarh and Muslims,Hindus and Christians from every walk of life.
A Little after six o'clock the funeral prayers were said on the cricket ground. The mournful procession then entered the boarding house compound and the guard of honour which had been appointed by the Government presented arms in a last farewell. The body was laid to rest to the north of the University Mosque.
