Mazhari new chairman of NMDFC
Qari Muhammad Azhar Mian Mazhari has been appointed chairman of the National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation (NMDFC). Mazhari has been appointed to this post by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee for a period of three years.
The NMDFC was set up in 1995 to remove the widespread poverty and economic under-growth among minority communities and to tackle their educational and social backwardness. It also aimed to cater to the educational and social needs of underprivileged students of minority communities. It has an annual budget of Rs. 5000 million. The corporation has several state units too. Mian’s appointment to the coveted post has been greeted by leaders of various sections of society.
Qari Muhmmad Mian is an Urdu journalist. An obscure figure in Urdu journalism, Mian is said to have been attached to Urdu newspapers and magazines since 1980. From 1980 to 1984 he worked in Daily Kirdar, Jaipur, and monthly Sultanul Hind which is published from Ajmer. In 1985 he went on to launch Qari, his own monthly magazine in Urdu. It ceased publication in 1992.
Mazhari has contributed to several Urdu newspapers and magazines and is said to have attended conferences in several countries. He has also authored a number of books including Alam-e-Islam par samrajiyat ke bhayanak saye. He is also publishing a weekly, Secular Qayadat, in Urdu and Hindi. Mian is also the chairman of a small outfit called ‘Islamic Council of India.’
Mian has earned fame as a proficient qari (reciter of the Qur’an) who has participated in several international qira'at competitions and has won a gold medal in Tehran in 1996. It is amazing that the government has chosen a rather unknown personality with no administrative or financial experience to head the corporation ignoring many leading Muslim personalities. After Shahnawaz this is another feather-weight appointment.
