STATEMENT ABOUT ARREST OF AMU STUDENT
The following unanimous resolution was passed by the Executive Committee of the AMU Staff Association at its meeting held on 6 Sept.2000:
This meeting would like to place on record its appreciation of the restraint shown by the students in general and of Mohd.Habib Hall in particular today (6.9.2000),when they discovered an I.B.operative in their Hall.If the group of students had not risen above the expected emotional responses and shown courage in taking a principled stand, then the situation would gone out of hand and would have harmed the interests of the University.
We would also condemn the adventurist attitude of the Govt Agency in sending an operative inside the Hostels without informing any University Officer including the Provost and Proctor, when the atmosphere was already surcharged and tense. We are constrained to point out that this is a case either of extreme incompetence or the deliberate provocation and we demand stern action against the people responsible.
The University community and the teachers are already involved in finding a solution to the problem of arrest of a student without following the due procedure of law,we are requesting the National Human Rights Commission ,Minorities Commission as well as MPs, MLAs, old Boys and other well wishers of the University to take cognizance of the issue and seek clarifications from the Government.
We,therefore, appeal to the students to help in restoring normal functioning in the University by resuming attending classes immediately, as empty class rooms play into the hands of the enemies of the University.
