Two AMU students arrested
|The U.P. police arrested two former students of the Aligarh Muslim University for alleged contacts with the J&K militant group, Hizbul Mujahideen. They were arrested in connection with a series of bomb blasts that rocked UP on the eve of Independence Day. They are also alleged to be behind a bomb blast on the eve of Bill Clinton visit to India. Muhammad Maruf was arrested from Agra whereas Abdul Mubin was arrested from a residential hall of Aligarh Muslim University on 4 September. The duo have been remanded to police custody in Agra.
The police says that Muhammad Maruf and Abdul Mubin were arrested in connection with the blasts and half a kilo of explosives was seized from them on information provided by Mubin. The police also say that Mubin, an internee in Hakeem Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, AMU, has confessed to having a hand in a bomb blast in a bus near Khandauli, in the suburbs of Agra, before Bill Clinton’s visit to India.
The SP of Agra city told reporters that the duo have also admitted to be involved in the blasts including the one that ripped apart a coach of the Sabarmati Express near Faizabad killing 10 people shortly before Independence Day. The SP added that Mubin has confessed that he had learnt to make bombs in Kashmir and has also accepted to have received Rs 5000 from Kashmiri militants belonging to the Hizbul Mujahideen. The police also allege that the two had planned to set off a bomb at Agra on 15 August when Independence Day procession would be taken out in the city. But the bomb accidentally went off killing their three accomplices.
The police has alleged that these students are related to the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIM). But the SIM has categorically denied that these person ever had any contact with it.
Following the arrest of Abdul Mubeen, AMU witnessed bitter unrest among students. Agitated student resorted to ransacking, stone pelting and damaged vehicles.
Independent sources claim that Abdul Mubeen, who belongs to Siddharth Nagar in eastern UP, was a student of BUMS and lived in Habib Hall of the University. He was forcibly kidnapped by some unidentified people who had come in a Tata Sumo car.
Following the students agitation the vice chancellor and the registrar met the student and had telephonic conversation with the home minister and home secretaries of the centre and state governments, following which they told the students that Abdul Mubeen was arrested by the Agra Police.
The sources also say that Abdul Mubeen has no criminal record so far. They also say that the ‘bomb blast’ in Agra which killed three persons was not actually a bomb blast as is being claimed by the police. On the contrary, they claim, it was an LPG cylinder that incidentally blasted killing three persons.
Meanwhile, an intelligence officer intercepted by students on the campus on 6 September has said in the presence of top police officials that the explosives were planted by IB people in Abdul Mubeen’s room in AMU. Allegedly the officer was beaten up by students.
