Advaniís half truths
By Obaid Nasir, Lucknow

That the Indian Home Minister resorts to lies and misguides the nation and the enquiry commission even after taking the oath for speaking the truth and truth only is crystal clear from the statement Mr Advani made before Liberhan Commission on 25 and 26 December 2001. Not only he deliberately misguided the Commission and the nation but he did not hesitate in charging the police force deployed in Ayodhya on the fateful day(6 December 1992)of dereliction of duty. Mr. Advani disclosed while deposing before the Commission that the force was asked not to resort to firing but it was not prohibited to use other means to save the disputed structure(Babri Masjid).

Mr.Advani very conveniently forgot that the then BJP govt. of UP headed by Kalyan Singh had provided all possible facilities to Kar Sewaks to assemble in Ayodhya in large number with all necessary tools to demolish the mosque. The much needed morale boost was provided by none other than Advani himself and other hawks of Sangh Parivar, including late Rajmata of Gwalior, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi and Vinay Katiyar the then President of Bajrang Dal. This correspondent is the eye witness of the demolition and remembers each and every word these leaders spoke before the thugs attacked the mosque. Had not Mr. Advani at about 2 p.m. asked the mob to block the Faizabad-Ayodhya Road as central forces including Rapid Action Force moved towards Ayodhya and reached near the Angoori Bagh from Faizabad cantt? Had not the Magistrate asked the central forces to go back to their barracks when they were surrounded by the hostile mob and the force was willing to move forward by mounting pressure on the mob in their own way. But as result of for this magisterial order under instructions from the political bosses the Faizabad administration was not in a position to issue any such order.

People's memory is no doubt short but not as short as Advani & Co think. Only nine years have passed since this tragedy. How Mr. Advani thinks that the people will forget this terrible event so easily when it has shaken the conscience of the nation. Advaniji wants to put all the blame on hapless police force which always acts as per the whims and desires of political bosses. If the notorious PAC helped or even overlooked the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992 it was the same PAC that had shot dead about 16 karsevaks in 1989 when they climbed the Babri Masjid to demolish it. Why this change in attitude in just three years. Because in 1989 the then political bosses (VP Singh and Mulayam Singh) were serious in protecting the mosque whereas in 1992 at least political bosses in UP (This correspondent gives benefit of doubt to PV Narsimha Rao even though the entire Muslim community blames him of being hand in glove with the Sangh Parivar) were interested in doing away with this symbol of slavery and the law enforcing agencies including the police force, which come under the state govt. fulfilled the long cherished dream of their political bosses.

Will Mr. Advani please enlighten the nation and the Liberhan Commission that if he disapproved the police inaction for not performing its duty, what prompted him and his Party the BJP to give the then Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. DB Rai the party ticket to contest the Parliamentary election from neighbouring Sultanpur constituency not once but twice and Mr. Advani himself went there to campaign for him and he won both the times. Also, he and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee owe an explanation to the nation as to what prompted them to appoint Mr. Prabahat Kumar the then Principal Home Secretary of UP as the Cabinet Secretary and then as the Governor of the newly created state of Jharkhand .Were not both these irresponsible officers awarded for their act of masterminding the open violation of supreme court's order and paving the way for demolishing the Babri Masjid. If this was the situation, who is going to believe that Advaniji and for that matter the entire BJ leadership including Mr. Vajpayee were against the demolition of Babri Masjid or were serious in the implementation of the apex court order with regard to the protection of Babri Masjid? The problem is that the saffron brigade has its own version of morality that may differ from universally accepted definition but in accordance with Dr. Goebbels motto, they insist on their own version and the opponents are branded anti national.

Mr. Advani has claimed in the same deposition that the demolition of Babri Masjid has harmed his party whereas in all his statements outside Parliament and Liberhan Commission he has proudly announced that Ayodhya movement has politically benefited his party and the party reached the figure of 182 from just two members in Parliament only a few years ago. He was not even slightly ashamed when he compared his infamous odyssey of hate(Rath Yatra) from Somnath to Ayodhya with Bapu's Dandi March. It is very sad that those who swear by Bapu's name did not deem it fit to initiate legal action against Advani to compel him to withdraw his comparison and seek public apology. This should however not surprise the nationalist elements as those who were opposed to freedom movement will surely not have any regard for the high moral values that Gandhiji adhered to during the entire freedom movement.

At least Hindu Mahasabaha has taken Advaniji to task and has termed his statement as treachery with the entire Hindu community for which the community will never pardon him. It has very rightly asked Mr. Advani to explain as to what prompted him to ride the Rath from Somnath to Ayodhya if it was not for the construction of Ram Temple at the disputed site and how that would have been possible without demolishing the Babri Masjid?

The nation's security is at stake both internally and externally. The tragedy is that the responsibility of both securities has been put upon tainted leaders: internal security on Advaniji facing criminal charges in connection with the demolition of Babri Masjid and external security or the defence on Mr. George Fernandes facing charges of corruption (Tehelka.com). How these tainted leaders will provide leadership and will boost the morale of their subordinates is a million dollar question and the patriotic elements should ponder over these hard facts.
