Survey on Christians
|Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has directed the Ahmedabad city police commissioner to consider a petition filed by the Christian community earlier this month. The petition is against the gathering of information about the Christian community by the police.
Passing the order, justice H K Rathod also issued notices to the home secretary, police commissioner and other officials. Samson Christian, national executive member of the All India Christians Council, moved the petition against the State of Gujarat, police commissioner of Ahmedabad, and police inspectors of Ellisbridge and Kagdapith police stations.
llegal, arbitrary and ab-initio void action of the respondents harassing and victimising Christians in the name of collecting census information based on an unpublished circular has been mentioned in the petition.
It was submitted by the petitioner that the respondent police department had come out with an interrogative circular in 1999 against the Christian community in such a manner that it violated fundamental rights inclusive of religious rights of minority Christians.
It was further submitted that in the year 2001, the same exercise had been started by the police department, virtually implementing the very same circular. This time, oral instructions had been given by the concerned police inspector in order to ensure that the newspapers or the court may not notice the same.
The petitioner alleged that the above action of the state and its officials was against the fundamental rights and the rights of minority Christians. q
