Differences in MOEMIN ranks
|Serious difference have reportedly arisen in the Movement for Empowerment of Muslim Indian (MOEMIN), launched around two years ago. A number of people who were in the forefront of launching the MOEMIN have expressed dissatisfaction over the functioning of the organization under the present chairman Zafar Saifullah.
Several founder members, including Prof. Alauddin Ahmad, ex-VC Jamia Hamdard, KM
Arifuddin, secretary Madina Education and Welfare Society, Syed Shahabuddin, president, Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat, Muhammad Shafi Moonis, naib amir, Jamat-e-Islami Hind and Saiyid Hamid, chancellor, Jamia Hamdard shot off a letter to the chairman on 6 February giving vent to their ire. The letter registers a number of grievances of these leading members of the movement.
‘We are sad to note that since the convention of May 1999, the Movement has been adrift without an anchor. The constitution, as drafted by the Drafting Committee, was submitted to the executive committee, which approved it in March 2000. It has taken 11 months for it to reach the steering committee and the founder members,’ the letter says. The letter also questions a number of steps taken by the chairman, particularly the move to register the MOEMIN as a society although it was perceived as a movement seeking Muslim empowerment.
The letter also asks the chairman to hold the organizational elections and to convene an urgent meeting of the executive committee in order to consider the amendments recommended by the steering committee, separation of the question of the registration of the movement as a society from application of the constitution and the finalization of a time-frame for the completion of the election of the office bearers.
