ISESCO tries to persuade Afghans against
|Rabat: The Rabat-based Islamic
Scientific, Educational and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) has initiated
contact with the governing authorities in Afghanistan, with a view to
dissuading them from demolishing the statues and other historical
landmarks, because they are humanity’s heritage.
ISESCO said that these were not idols that were being worshipped, but
historical landmarks that do not in any way impinge upon Islam or Islamic
beliefs, adding that ancient Muslim conquerors used to preserve such
landmarks in many countries, which had passed on to their suzerainty.
ISESCO has asked the Muslim world to intervene with the Afghan Taleban
authorities and persuade them not to carry out their threat of demolishing
the statues, adding that doing so would tarnish the very name of Islam.
The Secretary-General of ISESCO, Dr. Abdul Aziz Othman Al-Tuweijry has
already informed the UNESCO Director General about the contacts which his
organization has been trying to make in this connection, and how concerned
his organization is with not only preserving the Islamic heritage, but
humanity’s heritage as a whole, in the Muslim world.
