Plot against Urdu

The rise of communal forces in the country is in fact, equivalent to an organized plot to destroy secularism, particularly the identity of Muslims. These days when Muslims are being declared as ISI agents, efforts are being made to hurt the feelings of Muslims through Religious Places Bill. The way in which a BJP member of the Delhi assembly declared a Muslim member as ISI agent, it can very well be imagined that every Muslim of the country is the target of communalists. Similarly, plots against Muslims and their mother tongue, Urdu which is also the symbol of Ganga-Yamuna’s composite civilization are on. The plot of banishing Urdu from schools has almost succeeded and the plot to close down government’s monthly magazine Yojna and the weekly Rozgar Samachar soon is also on.

There is no denying the fact that the greatest harm as a result of division of the sub-continent is done to Indian Muslims. Right from the beginning of the war of independence till the entry into the twenty first century, patriotism of Muslims is being doubted, whereas the fact is that whenever the country faced any crisis, Muslims gave sacrifices and this thing goes on as usual. After partition of the country the right to employment and education in Urdu was grabbed from Urdu wallas and Muslims are being used as vote banks by exploiting them. It is an irony that the party which is mainly responsible for the poor and bad condition of Indian Muslims calls itself secular even today but its anti-Muslim policy played an important role in BJP’s coming into power at the centre. Today when plot is being made to make the Muslims second class citizens, every possible effort is being made to eliminate Urdu. The plot to close down Urdu newspapers through reducing the government budget for advertisements is a part of the plan of communalists. It is in fact an irony that an Urdu University has been established in the country but Urdu is being abolished at primary level. What will be the use of Urdu University when there will be no learners and readers of Urdu. In the National capital Region, when Delhi government was formed it was expected that probably Urdu will get its rightful place. The Congress government of Delhi did give the status of official language to Urdu but its effects are not visible or even perceptible. Even today the chief minister of Delhi appears to be proclaiming by beat of drums Urdu as the official language but her gesture gives the impression of communalism.

On one side plots are going on against Urdu at official level, on the other side Muslims themselves are no less responsible for its hapless condition and decline because they themselves do not educate their children in Urdu and do not use it in their daily life which have the effect in schools, media and in fact everywhere. There can be no denying the fact that the way Urdu has been removed from employment, its status has become like that of a stranger in her own country. Even now it is not too late and there is still time for the Muslims to foil such plots against Urdu and can make their own, and Urdu’s, future very bright, but they must demonstrate political consciousness and will unitedly.
