Saffron pogrom: Comment
By Ghulam Muhammed
The inhuman torching of men, women and children at Godhra reportedly by a Muslim mob cannot be condoned by any stretch of Islamic logic.
Granted VHP and Bajrang Dal had been building up a very dangerous climax over the rebuilding of the Ram Mandir which, according to observers, was in effect, Sangh Parivar's political agenda gone skewed, and that the whole barrage of positive assurances by Vajpayee and Advani about carrying out judicial strictures about maintaining status-quo and upholding law and order, inspired no trust and confidence, in practically all sections of non-Hindutva people of India,---- which does include Muslims too; but there are no signs that besides haranguing the central government, Muslims had any organised plan to take the matters in hand.
The extreme reaction by a group of so-called enraged Muslims in Godhra, cannot be without any instigation from political opposition to the BJP government. It is quite possible that the gruesome incident was whipped up for political reasons. Such rash reaction bordering on madness can never have any sanction from either the Muslim community leadership or grass-root Muslims all over the length and breadth of the country.
Media has been very restrained and responsible in treating the Godhra carnage and the consequent rioting in other Gujarat towns, known for their sensitive communal past. Narendra Modi's administration can hardly be expected to deal with Muslims in any impartial manner and his police force had predictably remained dumb witness to wide-spread rioting and deliberate murders. Having lost in 3 states, BJP is under pressure in Gujarat, and it takes no imagination to guess who could benefit by any wide-scale violence and unrest and who will be the eventual losers. Surely, the Muslims are the last people to attempt such suicidal reactions, and a judicial enquiry should delve deep into any possible conspiratorial role of political parties in fanning the communal violence, taking opportunist advantage of genuine hurt Muslim sentiments. q
