Wages of militancy
Over a decade of militancy, the economy
of Kashmir has been devastated. Tens of thousands of children and women
have been left as orphans and widows. The tale of woes is quite long,
painful and grave.
Having been moved by the pathetic and appalling conditions of the people,
especially the destitute, some philanthropists came forward, especially
the well-off Kashmiris settled in Arab, Gulf or in US. They made
significant contributions for the Kashmir cause. They raised huge amounts
and sent them to Kashmir. Undoubtedly a lot of money came here. But the
question which lurks in the minds of the ordinary Kashmiri is: where went
these huge amounts? The conditions of the destitute are worsening by each
passing day and nothing seems to have reached them.
The other side of the picture reveals that 'leaders' of the movement, with
few exceptions, have amassed enormous quantities of wealth. These leaders
mostly live in palatial houses in Srinagar. Leaders who resided in
villages have shifted to posh colonies in Srinagar. These leaders do not
hesitate living in luxury. Some leaders were seen to celebrate marriage
ceremonies of their sons and daughters with high pomp and show.
Recently one executive member of the APHC distributed marriage invitation
cards which cost rupees two hundred per card. Does this suit the present
circumstances of Jammu & Kashmir, people ask.
On one side are the destitutes, subjected to a miserable state of life and
on the other are 'leaders' robbing the rights of these destitutes and live
in luxury and amass millions of dollars in the name of the blood of
thousands of the committed youth who sacrificed their lives for the
Kashmir cause. What is this leadership and what version of Jihad they are
waging? q |
