Shahabuddin
The
controversial three-time MP from Siwan, Muhammad Shahabuddin is a man of
several contradictions. He has gained notoriety for winning elections from
anywhere even if it is his prison cell. Though he is hated by a number of
people he is equally loved by the people of his constituency. His love
encompasses all communities and all castes.
A teetotaller, Shahabuddin’s hobbies include horse-riding, badminton,
and shooting (he is an active member of All-India Rifle Club). He drinks
two liters of milk every day. A post graduate from local college he is
soon going to receive his PhD, having recently submitted his thesis on the
first coalition government in Bihar in 1967 at the BR Ambedkar Bihar
University, Muzaffarpur.
Shahabuddin who is accused in a number of cases was recently in news when
the local police revolted against him and went on to chase the local MP at
his residence in his native village, Paratpur. The fierce gun battle near
his residence left fourteen people dead including two policemen. The
police failed to trace the MP. Later the SP and the DM were transferred
from Siwan. Initially Laloo Yadav spoke criticizing the thirty-four year
old MP, but later he had to come to console him after several MLAs having
allegiance to Shahabuddin threatened to switch over to dissidents. A
minister in Rabri Cabinet resigned from his post.
The man who won first Assembly election when he was only twenty-two has
acquired over the years a Robin Hood image in the area protecting his
people from exploitation. One of his campaigns has been against
exploitation of patients by doctors. And except a few aberrations the
local administration has been in total awe of ‘Shahabu’ as he is
locally known. q |
