Celebrated Malayalam and English poetess and writer
KAMLA SURAYYA has been selected for Kerala Sahitya Academy Fellowship which carries a cash prize of Rs 25,000. Two golden medals, citation, plaque and a golden shawl are also offered under this fellowship. It may be recalled that the 67-year-old Madhavikutty alias Dr Kamla Das adopted the name Surayya after she embraced Islam on 11 December 1999.

Aligarh Muslim University has conferred an honorary D Lit degree on prominent Urdu critic, poet and litterateur
SHAMSUR RAHMAN FAROOQUI on his research and critical services.
Besides criticism and research he has worked on poetry and fiction and his four-volume book She’r-e-Shor Angez on Mir Taqi Mir is of immense importance which has won him Saraswati Samman.
Journalists SHAKIL AHMAD, MUHAMMAD SAIFUDDIN and NIYAZ ALI have been honoured for their services to journalism. The awards were presented to them on a meeting on ‘Unbiased journalism and unity of journalist’s organized by Bhartiya Patrakar Sangh, Allahabad.

ISMAIL MERCHANT have been honoured with Pama Bhushan while musician ABDUL LATIF KHAN has been given Padma Shree. These awards were presented by the President KR Narayanan on 27 March at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. It should be remembered that Ustad Abdul Latif Khan had been recently felicitated by Madhya Pradesh government by presenting a beautiful silver replica of sarangi and also a purse of Rs 75,000 raised by his disciples.
The Managing Committee of Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy has decided to confer Maulana Abul Kalam Azad awards on the following Urdu scholars.
Renowned scholar of Aligarh SHABBIR AHMAD GHORI will be given Rs 1,11,000 for his contribution to Urdu and Persian literature whose works have been published by Khuda Bakhsh Library in five volumes.
PROF AHMAR LARI, former head of the Department of Urdu of Gorakhpur University,
PROF FAZAL IMAM, former head of the Department of Urdu, Allahabad University and
PROF RIZVI. They will be given Rs 51,000 each. Maulana Abdul Wahid Siddiqui award of Rs 10,000 for journalism will go to late journalist
