Backward status demanded for WB Muslims
Kolkata: All-India Muslim Personal Law Board chairman, Syed Shahabuddin, demanded that the Muslims in West Bengal be granted ‘backward status’ by the state government. ‘Muslims of West Bengal are even more backward than those in neighbouring Bihar and Assam. The government has a responsibility towards improving their condition,’ he said while addressing a press conference in Kolkata on 19 March.
The Muslim leader also attacked Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya for his comments on madrasas. ‘Why should he interfere in the Constitutional rights of Muslims?’ Shahabuddin asked.
Muslims have got the right to set up schools for the education of their children. Since the government does not set up schools in Muslim-dominated areas, what option do poor Muslims have except for sending their children to these madrasas? Why does the government not leave them alone’, he said. q |
