Friday sermon in other languages

Cairo: The Mufti of Egypt, Shaikh Dr. Nasr Fareed Wasil, has given a ruling to the effect that it is admissible to deliver the Friday sermon in a language other than Arabic, provided that the people of the area cannot understand Arabic. He quoted Imam Abu Hanifa on that ruling. The only exception is that the Qur’anic Verses must be read in their Arabic original, though they may be followed by their translation.

He said the objective of the Friday Sermon is to proffer advice, to remind the listeners, and to instruct them on their Islamic duties, adding that this could only be achieved if the audience is listening to the sermon in the language that he understands.

Al-Azhar forbids renting of womb
Cairo: The Academy of Islamic Research, under the chairmanship of the Shaikh of Azhar, Dr. Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi, has forbidden the use of a “rented” womb, in the place of a woman’s egg cells and a man’s sperm cells in the womb of a third woman as it is forbidden by the Islamic Shari’a. The ruling came after a debate within the academy lasting over three hours.

This ruling has gained the support of senior scholars at Al-Azhar, at the Fiqh Academy in Makkah, and by the Kuwait-based Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences, which also has a membership of a number of scholars well versed in Fiqh and medicine. Several other Islamic conferences at which the topic has been discussed came up with the same ruling, as did the Christian Orthodox Church that is led by Pope Shennuda of Alexandria. The Academy of Islamic Research has also turned down the idea of maintaining sperm banks, in any Islamic country, and the setting up of such banks is considered immortal from the Islamic view point.

The Academy also considered the application of a deceased husband’s sperm in his living wife’s ovaries as unacceptable, for the simple reason that as soon as the husband died the relationship with her was discontinued.

Ruling on Pokemon
Doha: Shaikh Dr. Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi, the well-known Muslim scholar and preacher, has added his voice to the scholars who have declared a ban on the ubiquitous game of Pokemon, that has become very popular with the children of the Arab world. Shaikh Qaradhawi said the game was a danger to the Islamic faith, in that it embraces the Darwinian theory of evolution of the human being from the ape stage to his present stage.
He said the game's danger emanates from the fact that it instills in the young minds of children the idea of evolution of man, and the attitude of survival of the fittest, in which the end justifies the means.

Another reason for banning the game, said Qaradhawi, is that it encourages gambling, which is absolutely forbidden in Islam, as per the relevant Qur'anic verses.

Shaikh Qaradhawi advanced yet another additional reason for the ban. He said the game portrays certain symbols that are anathema to Muslims, such as the six-points star, symbolizing the Star of David, which has links with Zionism and Free Masonry, and that has come to symbolize the oppressive state of Israel. He said these symbols, when repeatedly seen by the young, leave a negative imprint in their minds, and are a negative influence.
