Awards: 16-31 May 2002

Salman Bin Razzak, a novelist who achieved fame in 1970s, has received "Katha" Award this year. Mr Razzak has been awarded for his story ‘Awaze Girya’ which appeared in his recently published third novel ‘Shikasta Buton Ke Darmeyan’. Razzak also has to his credit two novels ‘Nangi Dopaher ka Sipahi’ and ‘Mubassir’, which made him famous. Besides, his novels have been translated in different languages such as Hindi, Marathi etc.

Noted painter M F Hussain decided to stay away from the annual awards function of the Maharana Mewar Foundation which was held at the Lake City of Udaipur. Maqbool Fida Hussain was selected as the co-recipient of the current year’s Hakim Khan Sur award for national integration along with the renowned songstress Lata Mangeshkar. Hindutva outfits such as Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, and Kshatriya Mahasabha had threatened a "janata curfew"(people’s curfew) if Hussain was to be present in the city to receive the award. The Hindutva outfits alleged that the painter had insulted Hindu goddesses by painting them in the nude some time ago. Father of Indian missile Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is also amongst those who has been awarded with one of Maharana Mewar Foundation award. 

26th Matrishri Awards distribution ceremony was held on 5 May at FICCI Auditorium at Mandi House in New Delhi, in which several journalists and artistes were awarded. Prominent amongst those who received the awards included journalists Mohammed Imran Khan of UNI Urdu Service and Jalees Ehsan of Hindi News & Features Service Bhasha.

Eminent poet and lyricist Kaifi Azmi has been bestowed with the coveted award of ‘Sahitya Academy Fellowship’ recently organized at ISKCON Auditorium near Juhu Vile Parle at Mumbai. The function was attended by several film personalities and Urdu litterateurs. Kaifi Azmi’s wife Shaukat Azmi received the award on his behalf since the poet is still recuperating in a hospital after undergoing surgery. Secretary of Sahitya Academy K Sachchidanand presented the award. On the occasion, Shaukat Azmi and son-in-law Javed Akhtar recited the poems and ghazals of Kaifi Azmi.

Noted Shehnai Maestro, ‘Bharat Ratna’ Ustad Bismillah Khan, has been conferred with PC Chandra Puraskar 2002. The award was bestowed on him at Science City Auditorium in Kolkata. Ustad Bismillah Khan, who has adored Indian classical music with his enchanting melody, was presented the award by Somnath Chaterjee MP, Lok Sabha, and chairman, West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation.
