Arabic dictionary released
A historic and memorable meeting was
held in the Shaikhul Hind Maulana Mahmood Hasan Hall of Darul Uloom,
Deoband on 28 April 2001 under the chairmanship of Maulana Marghoobur
Rahman, principal of the Darul Uloom Deoband in which Maulana Waheeduz
Zaman Kairanwi’s most important compilation Al Qamoos Al Waheed’, an
Arabic dictionary comprising about two thousand pages, was released by
Maulana Mujahidul Islam Qasimi, president, All India Muslim Personal Law
Board. Distinguished ‘ulama, scholars, intellectuals, members of
teaching staff and students of Darul Uloom, prominent citizens of Deoband
and admirers of late Maulana Kairanwi were present in this function which
started after ‘Isha prayers with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an and
continued till late at night.
Prominent and learned speakers paid glowing tributes to the late Maulana
Kairanwi’s scholarly works, invaluable services for the spread of Arabic
language and literature, particularly Arabic lexicography which the world
can never forget.
It may be mentioned in this connection that earlier, Maulana Kairanwi had
compiled Al Qamoos Al Jadeed Urdu-Arabic, Al Qamoos Al Jadeed Arabic-Urdu
and Al Qamoos Al Istilahi which were extremely popular.
Maulana Marghoobur Rahman, who participated in this meeting despite his
advanced age and illness, said in his presidential address that Maulana
Waheeduz Zaman was a man of constructive personality whose invaluable
services to the Darul Uloom will be remembered for all times to come.
Releasing the dictionary, Qazi Mujahidul Islam Qasimi spoke about his past
association with Maulana Kairanwi and said that he was a man with a
revolutionary mind, a dynamic leader and a moving spirit behind the spread
and popularity of Arabic language and literature in the country.
Maulana Ameeduz Zaman, younger brother of Maulana Kairanwi, who is himself
a renowned Arabic scholar who reviewed the dictionary, wrote a scholarly
100-page foreword to this dictionary. He said that the dictionary consists
of about a hundred thousand words and expressions including those used in
the Qur’an, Hadith and Islamic sciences and is the most comprehensive
and authoritative Arabic-Urdu dictionary ever published in India, Pakistan
and Bangladesh.
Almost all the distinguished speakers spoke of their past association with
the late Maulana Kairanwi and paid rich tributes to him. The meeting ended
with prayer by Maulana Mohammad Abdullah Mughisi.
