Muslim women in Assam legislature

In the post independence period, altogether four Muslim women out of 251 Muslim legislators have been elected to the Assam Assembly since 1952. The state has 126 legislative Assembly constituencies.

Ms Afia Ahmad was the first Muslim lady member of the Assam Assembly. She was elected to the state legislature from Jamunamukh legislative Assembly on a Congress ticket in 1962.

Ms Sayeda Anwara Taimur was the second Muslim woman legislator of the Assam legislative body. She was elected to the state Assembly thrice on the Congress tickets. She was first elected from Mangaldoi constituency in 1972 and then from Dolgaon constituency in 1978 and 1991. She became the first lady chief minister of Assam on 6 December 1980.

In the recently concluded Assam Assembly election, two Muslim women are elected to the state legislature. Ms Hussainara Islam has won the Assembly election from Mankalhar legislative Assembly constituency on the Nationalists Congress Party ticket and Ms Sarifa Begum from Rupahihat constituency on a Congress ticket.
