Murder of women for ‘honour’

New Delhi: In a seminar jointly organized by Punjab (Pakistan) police and Ministry of Law and Human Rights on the topic of ‘Human Rights & Police’, the speakers expressed the view that murder of women in the name of honour (Karokari) is un-Islamic and illegal. The participants in the seminar also laid emphasis on stopping this practice and also the necessity of punishment to the accused in case he is found guilty after scientific investigation of such cases and also on the basis of solid proofs.

According to the daily Jung, addressing the seminar, Lahore’s DIG, Malik Mohammad Iqbal said that a woman’s murder for the sake of honour is not only un-Islamic but illegal also. He expressed his sympathy for women victims of ‘Karokari’. He said that according to a survey, 475 persons were murdered under the practice of ‘Karokari’ in 1998 in Punjab only out of which 318 were women. Seventy percent of them were under 25 years and 100 were unmarried.

In 1999, 500 persons were murdered under this practice. The session judge, Khadim Hussain Malik said that law does not give any concession or privilege to the murderers in the name of honour. Law does not also say not to punish the guilty. Law only asks for witness and proof and since such murders take place within the four walls of the house, witnesses against the culprits are also from the house itself. He said that since people do not want to testify or submit proof in the court, the guilty stand to benefit.
