Jamia Urdu: rival groups fight it out
Shots were exchanged recently in the premises of Jamia Urdu, Aligarh on the
question of Registrar's post and unpaid salaries of employees.
According to available information, disturbances took place because
employees were dissatisfied with the working of the registrar as they were
not paid their salaries for many months.
According to one party, a meeting of Jamia Urdu executive committee was held
in May wherein a resolution was passed unanimously removing the Jamia
president, JF Usmani and secretary/registrar, Anwar Saeed from their
respective posts and in their place Mrs Zafar Sherwani and Abaad Husain Khan
were appointed. When the newly-appointed office-bearers tried to take over
the charge, they were prevented from doing so by the supporters of previous
office holders. This led to fights and exchange of fires between the rival
According to available details, the outraged employees of the Jamia met the
existing registrar, Anwar Saeed, and complained about non-payment of
salaries to them. He asked them to meet him next morning. When the employees
went to see the registrar next morning, he was absent. This infuriated the
employees but they went to meet the President who pleaded helplessness. This
further infuriated the employees. They held a meeting in the council room
and announced the removal of the president and the registrar. After some
time supporters of the previous and the new incumbents reached the place and
indulged in the fracas.
On one side reports were registered with the police by Khurshid Alam Khan
s/o Habeeb Khan against some people under different sections and on the
other side Shabana Yasmin d/o Aneesur Rahman registered a report against
some people of the rival group under different sections. Both have stated in
the reports that when they reached the place, they were fired upon.
