Kerala Muslim population

Thiruanantapuram: During the past one century population of Muslims in Kerala was rapidly increasing in comparison with other communities but now it has dramatically decreased. The population expert, K.C. Zakaria has discovered after an extensive research based on provincial facts and figures of 2001 census that during the last decade Muslims have come quite close to other communities from the point of view of population. The rate of increase in the population of Muslim community in Kerala has become very slow. Though the statistics regarding community-wise population for the 2001 census have not been released yet, but the trend in Muslim majority districts makes the position clear. The rate of population increase in Mallapuram district was 29.4 percent in 1971, which fell to 20.9 percent in 1981-91 and became 17.2 percent in 1991-2001. Birth rate in 1981-91 was 30.8 percent, which was reduced to 23.7 percent in 199-2001. The rate of increase in population was reduced by around 75 percent and in birth rate, reduction was 71 percent and 25 percent reduction was because of migration.

He said this was not the position about Mallapuram Muslims only but the entire Muslim population of Kerala. Now Muslims have come almost to the same level of population increase as in the case other communities. Now the difference in the rate of population increase between Muslims and other communities of the state has very much reduced. The rate of increase in the population of Muslims is minimum as compared to other communities whereas there is not much difference in the rate population increase of Christians.

The annual rate of population increase of Muslims was 2.27 percent during 1981-91, which was reduced to 1.23 percent during 1991-2001. In other words it was reduced by 1.04 points or 45 percent as compared to the decade 1981-91. In case of Christian population, the decrease was from 0.71 (81-91) to 0.53 (1991-2001) i.e a decrease of 0.18 points (0.71-0.53) that mans one-eighth of the decrease in Muslim population. The percentage of birth rate in the district was equal i.e 0.9 percent among Muslims and Christians.

There was steep fall in this birth rate during the decade of 1990s.
