On 2 August the sports ministry announced the
names of the Arjuna Award winners and Dronacharya award winners. Both these
awards are given in the field of sports and sports-coaching respectively.
This year’s winners include Jalaluddin Rizvi in hockey and Akthar
Ali in tennis. All India Tennis Association had nominated Akhtar Ali for
Dronacharya Award and his son Zeeshan Ali for Arjuna Award. Zeeshan could not
get the award and his father Akhtar Ali was given Arjuna Award for lifetime
contribution instead of Dronacharya.
SM Arif won Dronacharya award for his contribution in coaching in
badminton. Under his coaching many badminton players performed well on national
and international levels. First time Jalaluddin was included in National Junior
team in 1975 for European tour. He made his entry in senior team in 1982 and
played against Pakistan in 1986 in Goodwill games in Russia. Jalaluddin was also
the member of 1984 Olympic team.
This year Arjuna Award winner will get Rs. 1.5 lakh and Dronacharya Award winner
Rs. 2.5 lakh besides an statuette and scroll of honour. The awards will be
presented on 29 August, the national sports day.
