Islamic scholar MAULANA ABDULLAH MUGHISI was unanimously elected president of All India Milli Council at its 7th annual meeting held in Aiwane-Ghalib, New Delhi on July 28. The meeting was chaired by Mufti Ashraf Ali, Amir-e- Shariat, Karnataka. Those present on the occasion included Maulana Muhammad Rabey Nadwi, President of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Mufti Muzaffar Hussain, rector Mazahir Uloom (Waqf) Saharanpur, Maulana Syed Nizamuddin of Bihar and Maulana Hameeduddin Aqil Husami of Hyderabad.

Chancellor of Ruhel Khand University, Bareilly and Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Vishnukant Shastri has conferred Ph D degree on MAULANA DR MUZAFFAR SULTAN HASAN TURABI for his thesis on Urdu literature on the occasion of the 5th convocation of the university. Turabi is origanising secretary of Moradabad Education Committee and a lecturer of Persian in Government Inter college, Moradabad. He completed his thesis "Urdu novel writing in the early half of 20th century: Critical Review" under the guidance of Dr Arif Hasan Khan, head of the Department of Urdu, Hindu College, Moradabad.

Senior Congress leader AHMAD PATEL will be looking after the AICC Minorities Department till an alternate substitute. He has been given this extra charge after the chairman of AICC Minorities Department, Abdur Rahman Antulay quit the post on July 12.

NAJMA HEPTULLAH, deputy chairperson of Rajya Sabha was given the charge of officiating Chairperson of Rajya Sabha following the death India's vice president Krishna Kant on July 27. 

SHABANA AZMI is a many-faceted actress. She has done various roles: from an innocent village girl to a matriarch and has won accolades for her genuineness. An actress apart, she has been a committed social activist, an intellectual and a politician as well. She never underestimates talents once conceived that they are sincere. She has always encouraged youngsters. One such example of her broad approach of genuineness is her role in Vishal Bharadwaj’s Makdee in which she has played the role of a witch. Vishal, the music director of Maachis fame was looking for someone to do the role for which he approached Azmi. After hearing the script, Azmi not only agreed to play the role, but also refused to take any money. One thing that she demanded was that the film should be well made. Makdee is made and is ready for the Lucas 2002 International Children’s Film Festival to be held in September.

ABDUL WAHID has been unanimously elected Delhi state president of National League. MIRZA ASHFAQUE BAIG has been elected general secretary while RAEES AHMAD SIDDIQUI and SHAHID KHAN have been elected vice presidents. NAEEMUDDIN GHEEWALA was elected secretary whereas TASLEEM KHAN was elected convenor. These selections were made in a meeting of the National League held on July 22 at Lal Darwaza, Hamdard Marg in New Delhi under the aegis of the national secretary Zamir Ahmad Jamlana.

A reception was given to the newly elected director of Minorities Financial Corporation of Delhi, MUHAMMAD TARIQUE SIDDIQUI on July 8 at Sangam Vihar, Delhi by president of District Congress Committee for Minorities Affairs. Chaudhry Salahuddin, president of Urs Committee, Government of Delhi chaired the meeting. Haji Muhammad Aslam Khan, convenor of the programme said that minorities should draw benefit form government schemes. Siddiqui presented details of the schemes of Delhi government for minorities.

Ten-year old BABUR FEROZ BHAT, a student of Heritage School had his feet on the ground at the Third International Open Teakwondo Championships held in the first week of July at Eschwage, Germany. The world is his oyester. He threw the Americans and kicked the Germans in their home. He is one of the five kids who represented India in the junior category and was placed third in the overall category. Bhat outdid his opponents despite their height. "My opponent knew only a drop kick, that’s when I decided to kick him hard", rejoices Bhat who won bronze and gold medals.

SHAAD ALI, son of film maker Muzaffar Ali and Suhasini Ali and grandson of ex-presidential candidate Captain Lakshmi Sehgal is a less known figure in Indian film Industry. After assisting his ideal director Mani Ratnam for more than four years, Shaad is busy completing his own debut film Saathiya which is based on Mani's super hit Tamil film Alai Payuthey. The script has been rewritten by Gulzar while the music has been composed by AR Rahman. Anil Mehta of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Lagaan fame has done cinematography. With great expectations, Shaad is waiting for the film to be released soon.

PROF MRS QAISAR JAHAN has been appointed head of the Department of Urdu of Aligarh Muslim University. She succeeds PROF ASHGHAR ABBAS who has been appointed honorary director of Sir Syed Academy. DR NAFEES AHMAD FAROOQUI, a reader at the Department of Anatomy, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of AMU has been promoted to head of the department. Mrs Qaisar and Farooqui’s terms will be for the three years. PROF MUHAMMAD MUBSHSHIR of the Department of Medicine has been made principal of Jwaharlal Nehru Medical College on the recommendation of general selection committee. DR MUHAMMAD JAMAL SIDDIQUI, a reader at the Department of Sociology and PROF IQBAL AHMAD KHAN of the Department of Electronics Engineering have been appointed provosts of Sir Syed Hall (South) and Muhammad Habib Hall respectively for two years.

MANSOOR HUSSAIN has been appointed president of Delhi unit of All India Shia-Sunni United Front. HAJI MUHAMMAD IKHLAS and MUHAMMAD HASEEB KHAN have been appointed vice presidents while SHAFIULLAH, RAFIQUE ALAM ABIDI and HAFEEZ AHMAD have been nominated general secretaries. Shafiulla has also been given the additional charge of acting as spokesman of the Front. The meeting was held in Delhi in July.

SAIMA TAK, daughter of Shenaz Ahemad Tak, a B Com student of Government College for Women Parade, Kashmir topped the Commerce stream in BA, B Sc and B Com. The results were declared on July 2.
