Jamia Urdu issue to the fore
|Jamia Urdu Bazyabi (recovery) Committee
has been formed by leading Muslim personalities following an investigative
report on the embattled Jamia that appeared in the Milli Gazette (1-15
August). The report brought to the fore the sordid state of affairs in the
historical institution where its registrar has devoured all the resources
and emptied the coffers of a leading institution serving Urdu. Around
three hundred employees of the Jamia have also not been paid their
salaries since early this year.
Jamia Urdu Bazyabi Committee has eminent educationist and chancellor of
the Jamia Hamdard Saiyid Hamid as its chairman and Syed Shahabuddin as its
convenor. The committee has been formed after detailed consultations with
leading community leaders.
The committee has three broad objectives and plans to work for their
attainment. Foremost among them is the survival of the Jamia Urdu as a
credible and autonomous academic institution of national eminence for the
promotion of Urdu language and literature. The committee aims to restore
the 1983 constitution, the rules and regulations of the Jamia which were
fraudulently replaced in 1995 vesting all powers in the hands of the
secretary/registrar and investigation of the administrative and financial
mismanagement of the Jamia since 1997-98 and prosecution of the persons
found guilty of misappropriation or fraud or criminal negligence.
Meanwhile the sufferings of the Jamia staff have not ended as yet. They
are still to be paid their salaries and there is no sign of normalization
of their situation. Jamia Staff Association, the Union of Jamia employees
is sitting on indefinite strike and Anwar Saeed’s connivance with local
administration continues. The agitation of the Jamia Staff Association has
started receiving widespread recognition and support from different
socio-political parties and people are coming forward to help them in
their fight against the mismanagement of the Jamia by a usurper.
