MOEMIN gets new team

Months of uncertainty came to an end with the election of the new office-bearers of the Movement for the Empowerment of Indian Muslims (MOEMIN). Veteran community leader Saiyid Hamid is the new chairman of the organization which was forged two years ago and embraces the cream of Muslim society

The community’s great hopes were dashed on the rocky stones of the super-ego of a former top bureaucrat who was coopted with the hope that his presence at the helm of the organization will help MOEMIN’s cause. The movement made no progress and got bogged down under unproductive semantics about procedures and powers of the office-bearers while the whole idea of the organization was to selflessly serve the community and help it recover lost ground.

Things came to an impasse when the outgoing chairman refused to accept his successor and demanded concessions which go against the letter and spirit of earlier resolutions. To end the controversy the successor, who belongs to the rarest of rare breed of scholar-bureaucrats, offered to step down and new elections were held to resolve the crisis. This is his second sacrifice for the organization. Earlier too he had withdrawn in favour of the outgoing chairman and was content with the post of co-chairman with the understanding that he will take over as chairman automatically on the expiry of the first chairman’s term. But the previous chairman with some of his supporters refused to take part in the elections and held an unauthorized meeting in Mumbai. Eminent people, like Rafiq Zakaria who took part in that meeting, disagree with the colour and substance given later by that splinter group. Efforts are on to bring the two groups to a common meeting ground in order to resume the march to empower the community.
