Awards: 16-30 September 2001

Qazi Mujahidul Islam Qasmi, president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, was awarded the 2nd Shah Waliullah Memorial Award by the Institute of Objective Studies (IOS) in a function at Engineering College Auditorium, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) New Delhi on 26 August. The Award consists of a cheque of Rs one lakh along with a shield. The first award was awarded posthumously to the name of late Maulana Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi.
Dr Muhammad Manzoor Alam, chairman of IOS, said while explaining as to why the award was named after Shah Waliullah that Shah Saheb was an indisputable scholar of the 18th century who not only knew the past and worked extensively for the present, but was also a renovator and a man who left behind indelible ideas and works which are equally useful for the present and coming generations. He added that the IOS has formed a committee of referees and judges to decide as to whom the award should go. This year the award goes to Qazi Mujahidul Islam Qasmi by the unanimous decision of the referees and trustees of the award committee. Next year IOS is going to institute another award for the economic development of Indian Muslims, which would consist of Rs 25,000, he added.
Qazi Mujahidul Islam Qasmi accepted the award as a great honour for him. He said the amount has no meaning but I accept it because my own community and people have honored me. He further said that people knew Indian Muslims through Shah Waliullah. He said he had keen sense of observation which we lack today. He was very open to accept fiqhi differences and avoided to make comments on others opinions. He is worth emulating, Qazi saheb added. He also requested Shahid Hasan Mehdi VC of Jamia Millia to set up a chair both for Shah Waliullah and Shaikhul Hind Maulana Mahmud Hasan. Addressing the new generation of ulama, he said that we are traveling through a road but are unaware of the obstacles and impediments. That is why we get hurt and fall down.
Justice AM Ahmadi presented the shield to Qazi saheb and said that he was a man of unequalled knowledge. His fiqh compilations are a great achievement of an individual, he added.
