SC upholds life sentence for Kolkata blast accused

New Delhi: A three-judge bench of Supreme Court on September 3 upheld the judgement of lower courts, awarding life imprisonment for the accused of March 16, 1993 explosions in the Bow Bazar area of Kolkata.

The judges, Chief Justice B.N. Kirpal, Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice Arijit Pasayat observed that as a result of fanatical acts of some misguided people, innocent lives are lost, distrust in the minds of communities replaces love and affection for others.

On March 16, 1993 there was an explosion in the Bow Bazar area of Kolkata. In the bomb blast 69 people were killed and property worth crores of rupees was destroyed.
