Rejoinders
Divide and rule
I read the visible relief of the author Ghulam Mohammed on India's anti-war stance (India and the war on Iraq) with some amusement. The fact remains that India's support or opposition does not count so much on a war in which fellow Arabs, of all people, are willingly allowing US army to use their soil as a base against another Arab country. Forget about Israel's brutal campaign against the hapless Palestinians, I do not understand why the Arab countries collectively (using the OIC) or singly can't stand up to Uncle Sam and say no, firmly. I was aghast at the sheer number of US naval/military bases shown by CNN today in the Gulf - Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, UAE, you name it, the Americans are there. It is to India's enormous credit and a tribue to our leaders of the last 55 years that we never had to surrender our military sovereignty like this (the surrender part applies to Pakistan as well, thanks to the 'war on
terrorism'!). Coming back to the article, India making the right noises to please one section or the other is not the issue at hand, the issues are loss of sovereignty of the Gulf nations and the Arabs being drawn into fighting among themselves. Its divide and rule, after all and nobody in the Middle-East is going to be better for succumbing to it.
