Awards: 16-30 November 2001
The noted social worker and retired judge, Ms.
Fatima Rahman, has been selected for this year’s Prof. Syed Muhyuddin Shah
award instituted by the institute of Mapila Studies (IMS). The award was
presented by the Industries Minister PK Kunj Ali Kutty at a function held in
Kochi on November 3. Ms. Rahman has won a number of prestigious awards including
the Mahila Shiromani award, Al Ameen Community Leader Award and Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed
Khan award.
Professor Obaid Siddiqui, has received the GM Modi Innovative Science and
Technology Award for 2001, for his achievements in the field of genetic
engineering.
Sufi Tahir Hasan Usmani, an alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University was
awarded for his long services in the field of mathematics at Islamia Inter
College, Saharanpur. He was awarded on the occasion of Sir Syed Day function
organized by the Muslim Girls Inter College. SSP Alok Sharma Alig, chief guest,
felicitated him by a shawl. Sufi Tahir Usmani after doing his BA and B Ed from
Aligarh Muslim University in 1954 was appointed teacher at Islamia Inter College
on a small salary. Moreover, he would not get his salary for several months
because of poor financial condition of the college. In spite of the advices of
relatives and friends for the contrary, he neither left his home town nor his
college.
The Karnataka State Government has announced the winners of Rajyotsava Award.
The awardees include Azim Premji, chairman of Wipro group of companies, Basheer
(drama), Fakir Muhammad Katpadi (literature) and Lal Muhammad Bande
Nawaz. The Chief Minister SM Krishan felicitated them with a gold medal, a
citation and a shawl. q
