Sean Connery to act as ‘Salahuddin’
By a Correspondent in Cairo
Hollywood superstand Sean Connery will play the leading role in a film about the legendry Muslim ruler Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi (Saladin) who recovered Jerusalem from the clutches of the Crusaders in Oct. 1187CE and registered an eternal page in the annals of history on how the vanquished are treated with dignity and mercy despite repeated treacheries and known cruelty of the Crusaders who, according to their own accounts, had put tens of thousands of the holy city’s Muslim and Jewish residents to death when they captured it in July 1099 CE. The film is being produced by Hollywood director Mustafa Al-Aqqad who has earlier produced The Message (with Anthony Quinn, Irene Pappas) and Omar Mukhtar (Anthony Quinn). The first is about the advent of Islam and the latter about the Libyan freedom fighter who resisted the Italian colonialists for decades before he was arrested and hanged by the fascists in 1931.
Yusuf Shahin, an Egyptian director, had earlier produced a film about Salahuddin (played by the Egyptian actor Ahmad Mazhar) in Arabic. Mustafa al-Aqqad said in Cairo recently that his film will have a world perspective and will help correct the misconceptions being spread in recent times about Islam and Muslims, especially in the context of the Arab struggle to regain the occupied territories in Palestine. q |
