RSS combine to blame: VP
|New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh on 29 Nov. said the BJP-VHP-RSS combine had worked for the demolition of the Babri mosque and the strategy was nothing new to the Sangh Parivar. He was deposing before the Liberhan Commission.
Replying to a question as to whether the demolition followed a misjudgement on the part of the then prime minister P V Narsimha Rao who had relied on assurances given by the BJP, Mr Singh said, ‘I am not here to make allegations. Even if we allow the grace of misjudgement, the fact that even after president’s rule the temple continued to be constructed, to my information, for more than 24 hours can’t be explained by mere misjudgement. The prime minister was in full control’.
Mr Singh said the continued reliance of Mr Rao’s government on the BJP-VHP-RSS combine gave some ‘impression’ that there was some ‘common understanding’. Asked to elaborate as to why Congress ‘offered’ shilanyas to the VHP, Mr Singh said it did so to gain Hindu sentiments in its favour.
