Senior CPI leader and MLA Basheshwar Khan has been conferred Barsamanda Memorial Award for best legislator of the year on the occasion of 1st Anniversary of Jharkhand Assembly. Khan has been representing his Nala constituency since 1962 and was the unanimous choice for the award.
Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan was conferred the prestigious National Tansen Award during the inaugural function of three-day Tansen Music Festival on 6 December in Gwalior. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh presented the award to him. The award carried a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. Sitar maestro Ustad Shujat Hussain Khan was given the National Kumar Gandharva award the next day.
The UK born Indian director Asif Kapadia has won the British Film Institute award for his debut feature film The Warrior. At an awards ceremony, the jury member Wolfgangh Tillsman presented the Sutherland Trophy to Kapadia for the most original and imaginative first feature film screened during the 45th Regus London Film Festival. 29-year-old Kapadia originally belongs to a Gujarati Muslim family.
Ms RT Zahidi of South Eastern Railway, a recipient of President Guide Medal, has been honoured for her outstanding services to the Railways. Lauding the contributions of the Railway Women’s Welfare Central Organization, of which she is a part, the Union Railway Minister Nitish Kumar said that the organization has played a vital role in uplifting women by its services.
Professor Kr Khalil A. Khan, Department of Electronics Engineering at Aligarh Muslim University has been honoured by the Progress India Colloquium for his outstanding contribution in the filed of Electronics and Electronics and Communication Engineering. Professor Khan has been presented a Millennium Excellence Award-2001, which includes a Gold Plated Medal and a citation by the Progress India Colloquium – a voluntary non-political organisation based at New Delhi and comprised of seriously dedicated intellectuals, professionals and socio-activists mobilising public opinion in a pragmatic and practical line on issues related to socio-economic development of India. Professor Khan has already received several national and international awards.
Master Arfan Ayyub has been selected for this year’s Kerala State TV Award the Best child artist for his performance in the tele-serial Minnaminungukal (glow-worms), and A Anwar’s Suvarna Swpnangal (golden dreams) bagged the award for the best children’s programme. This was announced by the Cultural Minister G Kartikeyan in Thiruvananthapuram on Dec.2. The awards announced will be presented at a function later this month
Lady wrestler Shamaila Khan of Delhi has won Gold Medal in the 31st National Sports Competition held in Jalandhar. She defeated Raman Chanu of Manipur.
