Babukhan quits TDP

Following is a press statement issued on July 16, 2004, by Bashiruddin Babukhan:
I had entered the political scene of Andhra Pradesh by joining the Telugu Desam Party in 1985, at the personal calling of its Founder, Late Mr. N.T. Rama Rao. I had the opportunity to represent the people of Bodhan in the Legislative Assembly for two terms. I was also privileged to serve the people of the State as a Cabinet Minister twice, holding important portfolios. The people of Bodhan constituency bear witness to my contribution as an MLA and as a Minister in the all round development of the area. I must acknowledge and thank the Telugu Desam Party, its leadership and the people of Bodhan for the confidence reposed in me, and enabling me to make my humble contribution to the public life of the State.

On a matter of Principle and Policy, I differed with the TDP leadership, when they extended support to the NDA Government at the center, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is widely regarded as stark communal, fascist and anti minorities, and therefore an antinational force. A major policy plank of that party is to annihilate the minorities. This has been amply demonstrated by the State assisted pogrom in Gujarat. Inspite of my pleadings, the Telugu Desam Party did not review its decision and, I had to resign from the Ministry, in March 1998. However, I continued to be a part of the TDP, hoping that the Party would retrace its steps. That did not happen. The results of recent elections of Lok Sabha and A.P. State Legislature, have amply demonstrated that, the voters outright rejected, not only the BJP but, its supporting parties, including TDP. Thereafter, I met the Party President Sri. N. Chandrababu Naidu and urged him to have an open dialogue within the Party and review the policy of alliance with the BJP. This meeting was followed by a written communication to Sri. N. Chandrababu Naidu (copy enclosed).

In the absence of any response to this from the TDP President and, being under tremendous pressure from my supporters, well-wishers and community leaders, I hereby announce my resignation from the Membership of the Telugu Desam Party.
