AFMI to hold annual convention in Toronto
Toronto: The American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) will hold its fourteenth annual convention in the Canadian city of Toronto on September 25th, 2004. The theme of the one day convention is "India's Shinning Democracy: Future Prospects."
Mr.Ram Vilas Paswan, India’s Cabinet Minister for Steel, Chemicals and Fertilizers, will be the keynote speaker. Other speakers include Mr.Siraj Tirmizi (editor, Gujarat Today), Maulana Fazlur Raheem Mujadiddi (Foundation for Civil Liberties, India), Dr.A.R.Nakadar (Trustee, AFMI), Dr.Syed Samee (president, AFMI), Dr. Omar Khalidi (research scholar, MIT) and Dr. Aslam Abdullah (editor, The Muslim Observer),Prof: Balakrishnan Rajagopal (Director, MIT's Program on Human Rights and Justice), Prof,Mir Ali, New Jersey).
Delegates to the convention will be coming from across North America and will discuss issues relating to the strengthening of India’s democracy.
Convention chairman Mr.B.H.Bhayat said, "We are immensely proud that our great city of Toronto has been selected for this year’s convention. Toronto’s multicultural texture provides a perfect setting for holding AFMI’s annual convention in our city."
AFMI is a North American based grassroots organization dedicated to the socio-economic and educational development of Muslims and other underprivileged masses in India. It also strives to encourage excellence in Muslim youth in North America as well as in India. AFMI has chapters in major cities of USA and in Toronto, Canada.
