Creating "Jews" in the NE

By Our Special Correspondent

Imphal: At a time when the Palestinians' rightful and genuine struggle against the brutal occupation of their lands by Zionists swearing by the political philosophy known as Zionism, an equally obnoxious line of thinking as Nazism under which Jews had suffered in the heart of Christendom, has resulted in the terrorization of the whole Palestinian people, old, young and sick, with their lands being bulldozed away to make room for the settlers coming from around the globe, the process of the creation of a new brand of Jews in India’s Northeast is going on fast.

Already Mizoram, a predominantly Christian state, has been known as India's "Little Israel" with many from the state having gone to Israel as a "religious" duty of being “Jews". These people claim that they are the descendants of Manasseh tribe, one of the ten tribes exiled from the Holy Land by the Assyrians more than 2700 years ago. These Jackie Chan-look alike Jews - until the other day they were Christians - feel that they should go to Israel as a “religious” calling, and this despite the fact that the so-called settlers, who are in fact land usurpers, are put on the lands which belong to the Palestinians against whom Israel has launched no less than a war with its US-supplied military machinery. Once they become aware of their "Jewishness" they, in a stark case of politically-influenced "religious" orientation, feel compelled to go to Israel and settle there providing a shield to "protect' the core of Israeli society - a society that some commentators rightly, as historic irony, termed as totally Nazified.

After Mizoram, now in the state of Manipur the Kuki-Chin- Mizo group claims that they too belong to that category - Jews. Two emissaries, from an Israeli organization Amishav, meaning "my people come back", came to Imphal recently to work on the establishment of a Hebrew Centre to teach Hebrew language, tradition and culture among the Jews in Manipur. That is, a different tradition and culture for Jews is considered essential. Or is it the extension of "civilizational faultline" - framework suspected of guiding the self-acknowledged crusade of George W. Bush?

Observers of these developments in the region do not fail to notice a curious absence. The ever-sensitive Christian missionaries sworn to convert the "heathens" and Jews before the second coming of Christ whom they claim to be the "only begotten son of God" do not whimper when many "born again sinners" walk out of the fold of Christianity because they have now discovered their Jewish roots. It is a major paradox of our times that when native people are driven out from their homes so as to settle others any protest against this amounts to what they describe as anti-Semitism which also serves the ideology that protects the settler-state of Israel, a state providing fertilizer to international chaos and terrorism.
