Dalit Christians launch campaign
The Dalit Christians community has launched a vigorous political advocacy campaign during November in view of the Supreme court asking the government to speak its mind on the issue of giving Dalit Christians the same rights now available to Dalits of major religions such as Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism.
Leaders of the Catholic Bishops Conference, the All India Catholic Union, the All India Christian Council , Church of North India and other groups have in recent days canvassed with leaders of Ruling and Opposition parties, and Central Ministers to also urge the Government of India to reintroduce in the next session of Parliament -- in December 2004 -- the Bill the earlier Congress government of Prime Minister Narasimha Rao had first introduced, and which could not be taken up as the Lok Sabha as dissolved.
A memorandum has been drafted for the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, leader of the ruling coalition in this regard.
