Maulana Umari: a distinguished scholar

Maulana Syed Jalaluddin UmAriJamaat-e-Islami Hind vice president (Naib Ameer) Maulana Syed Jalaluddin UmAri is famous as a religious scholar, orator, researcher and as an author who has deep knowledge about Qur’an and Sunnah. He is also at home in arts and sciences. His style of speech and logic is unique.

Born in 1935 in Tamil Nadu, he received his early education at Jamia Darus Salam Oomerabad, Tamil Nadu and thereafter he did Munshi Fazil in Persian from Madras University and graduation in English from AMU .

Maulana Umari is closely associated with the JIH’s Central Advisory Committee, Jamiatul Falah, Azamgarh, Sirajul Uloom, Niswan College, Aligarh and a number of other educational institutions as a patron.

He remained editor of the JIH monthly Zindagi-e Nau for 5 years and has been serving the quarterly Tahqiqat-e Islami’ for the past 21 years as its editor.

Maulana Umri has written two dozen books which deal with a variety of subjects like relations with non-Muslims and their rights, health and disease in Islamic teachings, the concept of God and Prophet in Islamic teachings, the concept of public service in Islam and difficulties of life. Islam’s social system is his favourite subject. Many of his books have been translated and published in Arabic, English, Turkish, Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, and Urdu languages. His books Woman in Islamic Society, Rights of Muslim Women and an Analysis of Criticisms Thereon, Woman and Islam and Responsibilities of Muslim Ladies are proofs of his interest in Islamic social system.

Recently he disapproved of even those family planning methods which were in vogue and accepted during the Prophet’s time. This shocked his admirers and demonstrated that traditional ulama are not yet ready to offer leadership to the Ummah in crucial issues of our times.
