Maulana Ghualm Ahmad Ahrar

One of the founders of Jamaat-e Islami Jammu & Kashmir, Maulana Ghulam Ahmad Ahrar died on 25 August this year after a prolonged illness. He was 90. Before Partition he was actively involved in the state politics and took part in religious activities also. As a result he underwent trials and tribulations.

In deference to the wishes of his father, he went to Punjab to acquire religious education. He studied at Amritsar’s Madrasa Nusratul Hasan and became the president of Jamiat Talaba (students union) when it came into existence at Amritsar. As its president, he met many great personalities including Ataullah Shah Bukhari, Chaudhary Fazle Haq, Allama Iqbal, Maulana Habibur Rahman Ludhianwi and others. All of them appreciated his religious zeal. He propogated the mission of Jamaat-e-Islami in every nook and corner of the state and was instrumental in the emergence of Jamaat-e Islami Jammu & Kashmir in 1946. In 1958 he was asked to prepare the basic structure of the Jamaat in Jammu region. He traveled within Jammu for full 22 months and visited Jammu, Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, Udhampur on foot for this purpose. He was loved as an orator and sincere activist.
