UGC interfering with AMU admission policy
Aligarh: University Grants Commission (UGC) along with the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) recently issued an order asking Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) not to conduct admission test for professional courses that are intended to be held at all India level under the AICTE.
AMU students have alleged that desperate attempts are being made to interfere in the internal affairs of the AMU. "At present Muslims in the country are constantly being targetted, harassed and humiliated by forces of disruption who do not want to see India progress or remain united. AMU enjoys the status of a minority institution through an act of parliament. Moreover section 1215 (c) of AMU Amendment Act 1981 entrusted the AMU with the task of educational and cultural advancement of Indian Muslims. Is it that the AMU was founded by a Muslim and has "Muslim" in its nomenclature that it is being made to face the music of the communalists in the administration?" the students asked.
The Academic Council of AMU convened a meeting on 1 December 2003, and passed an unanimous resolution rejecting the said order of the UGC. Now that plans for Common Admission Test including the seats of the AMU has already been announced the reaction of UGC authorities is awaited, AMU sources said.
