‘Demolition of Babri Masjid a historical tragedy’
Bareilly: Addressing a function at Ruhelkhand University here on 4 June, senior journalist Kuldip Nayar said that demolition of Babri Masjid was a historical tragedy and its demolition tantamounted to an attack on the whole country. He suggested that the disputed site should be left vacant so that whenever future generations see that place, they remmemer the blunder of their forefathers.
He said that the site should be left vacant in the same way as the site in Hiroshima which was destroyed by the atom bomb. People from all over the world visit that vacant space, imagination of the tragedies suffered by the people of Hiroshima brings tears to their eyes. He asked if the foundation of the politics of our country could be laid on any single religion? He said that if it happens the country will break up.
Nayar said that when Russia was passing through turmoil the former soviet leader Gorbachev had asked his leaders to go to India and see how the composite culture and civilisation of the country had kept its people united.
