Samajwadi Party was aware of the conspiracy to demolish Babri Masjid

New Delhi: The Samajwadi party in UP knew about the plot to demolish Babri Masjid and it had cautioned the then President, Shankar Dayal Sharma in writing about the possibility of the Masjid being demolished on 6 December 1992. This was stated by UP’s advocate general, Virendra Bhatia on June 3 while testifying before the Liberhan Commission enquiring into the demolition of Babri Masjid. He said that in spite of Supreme Court’s directive, the Kalyan Singh government had made no effort to prevent the assembly of people in such a large number in Ayodhya.

Earlier, UP chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had also appeared before the commission as a witness and said that Kalyan Singh and top leaders of VHP and BJP were complicit in the conspiracy to demolish Babri Masjid. Mulayam had also accused former prime minister Narasimha Rao of being indirectly involved in the conspiracy.

Advocate general Bhatia said that instead of taking steps for preventing the gathering of ‘karsevaks’, they were encouraged to gather in large numbers and provided with tools and implements for demolishing the mosque. The facts prove that Babri Masjid was demolished under a conspiracy. The state government and district administration knew that it would be difficult to control the frenzied mob incited by religious provocations.

Bhatia said that the karsevaks were allowed to reach Ayodhya and forcibly entered the mosque. No VHP or BJP top leader made any attempt to control and pacify the mob. He further said that central security forces were kept far away from the mosque, rendering them unable to protect the mosque. (
