Lalu for new probe on Godhra fire
New Delhi: Railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav is likely to initiate a fresh probe into the cause of the fire that burnt a coach of the Sabarmati Express, in which 58 people were killed on February 27, 2002. The minister will try to establish the identity of the people who were killed in the train fire.
The Gujarat government had claimed that the coach was burnt by a mob that locked the passengers inside the coach, poured petrol from outside and burnt it, while investigations conducted by the Intelligence Bureau, the Railway Protection Force and the scientific examination of the burnt material by the Gujarat Forensic Science Laboratory established that the fire had broken out from within the coach. The inquiry by the RPF, the sources said, found that there was no smell of any petrol. The Gujarat State Forensic Science Laboratory too had clearly said that no petroleum product was used to ignite the fire.
Lalu Yadav had called for all the relevant files and has gone through them. He was appalled to note that the railways had not investigated the cause of fire, which led not only to the loss of 58 innocent lives but also triggered statewide riots.
