Awards

Noted journalist SYED MUNIR NIAZI was presented the 28th Matra Shri Award 2004 by Rajasthan governor Madan Lal Khurana at Delhi’s FICCI auditorium on 16 May. JAFAR IRSHAD of Bhasha was also given the award. The award winners include journalists and photographers from both electronic and print media. the ‘Bharat Mata Shield” presented to Niazi was collected by his relative Munira as the former could not attend the meeting due to official engagements. Syed Munir Niazi has been associated with Urdu daily Azad Hind, published from Kolkata for long. He is known for his selection of news and brisk captions. He has been writing exclusive articles in prominent Urdu and Hindi newspapers and journals.

Well-known researcher PROF. NISAR AHMAD FAROOQUI has been selected for this year’s award for promotion of Urdu literature in the world. The award, consisting of a cash prize of Rs 150000 and gold medal would be presented to Farooqui at an award function to be held in Doha (Qatar). In Pakistan, the award will be given to noted novelist Abdullah Hussain. This was stated in a press release of Majlis Farogh-e-Urdu Adab. Former Professor of Delhi University, Prof. Nisar Farooqui has command over Urdu, Persian and Arabic languages and his literary works cover sufism and Islamic thoughts. He has authored more than 50 books and is recipient of several awards and honours including Ghalib Award and Presidential award.

MOHAMMAD AFTAB ALAM, son of Mohammad Idris Alam of Kolkata was recently honoured with Young Scientist Award at a seminar organisied under the auspices of Meteorology and Forest Department by Science and Culture Organisation for Youth at Kolkata Science Society. Participants from all over India presented their articles in the seminar. An M Sc II year student at the Department of Marine Science, Calcutta University, Aftab Alam is a former student of Babul Uloom, Maula Ali, Kolkata and is a hafiz of the Holy Quran. Principal of the madrasa, Qari Muhammad Ismail Zafar has congratulated Aftab and his parents for his success.
