Togadia may be deprived of medical degree

Jaipur: VHP leader Dr Praveen Togadia, who has been spearheading Hindutva campaign throughout the country, may be deprived of his medical degree if action is taken on the complaint filed against him with Medical Council of India. Medico Friends Circle, an organisation of medical practitioners, has lodged a complaint against him with the council.

This organisation said in its complaint that Dr Togadia was carrying on a campaign of calumny and hatred against a particular community of the country and the derogatory and abusive words he was using render him unfit to be a doctor. According to the complaint, the activities and views of Dr Togadia come within the category of misbehaviour under the stipulations of Medical Council and violate Article 1.11 of Medical Council which clearly lays down that a physician will maintain the dignity of his profession. Article 1.12 says that the objective and duty of a person associated with medical profession is service to all humanity.

The organisation said that at the time of taking oath a doctor vows that he won’t allow any feeling of discrimination against his patients on the grounds of caste, colour, religion and region . But the documents with the Medical Council indicate that Togadia has violated the oath on a number of occasions. A Gujarat High Court judge had testified before a Tribunal about VHP having threatened many doctors not to treat Muslims. He cited the name of a doctor who had handled a delivery case in a relief camp in Guajrat. Dr Togadia had himself intimidated the doctor and warned him not to do such things in future.
It may be noted that Togadia is running Dhanwantri Hospital in Ahmadabad. Recently he had issued an advertisement on the city cable asking all nurses and doctors to report to his hospital. He simply wanted to recall all Hindu doctors working in Muslim-run hospitals. The proofs submitted by the organisation against him are solid and indisputable. It depends on Medical Council what action it takes against Togadia. (Rashtriya Sahara (Urdu daily), May 5, 2004)
