New Delhi: The Sabarkantha District Civil and Sessions Court in Gujarat issued summons to the chief minister Narendra Modi and twelve others on May 6 in civil suits seeking compensation for the families of two Britons killed in the post-Godhra riots.

Besides Modi, former home minister Gordhan Zadaphia, former home secretary Ashok Narayan and former DGP K Chakravarti have been asked by the court to appear before the court on June 24 in persons or through their lawyers.
The dependents of the two Britons have sought compensation of Rs. 22.18 crore for the murder of Saeed Dawood (30) and Shakeel Dawood (41). Shakeel and his cousins Saeed, Imran Dawood and Mohammed Aswat, were attacked by a mob near Wadwasa village when they were on their way by car to their ancestral home in Lajpur village, Navsari district. Shakeel and Saeed died on the spot, Imran escaped but sustained severe injuries and Aswat still remains missing. Aswat too, it seems, was killed and his body was carefully disposed of.

The spokesperson for the Dawood’s family from Batley in West Yorkshire, UK, where the victims were settled, said that a plaint of 60 pages was filed after consultation with international lawyers and legal experts. The spokesperson, Suresh Grover, said that the family wanted criminal proceeding against the accused but having no recourse to the Indian legal system, they opted for filing civil suits against damages. The wives of the deceased sought compensation of Rs. 18.18 crore, and Imran Rs. 4 crore for the injuries he sustained. Grover said that the eyewitness accounts have also been appended in the plaint. Besides Saeed and Shakil Dawood, their driver Yusuf Peragar was also killed by the mob.
