Bullshit as hard news

The following letter was sent by email as well as by courier but Hindustan Times, as usual with India’s mainstream media, failed to take note when it was caught pants down.

KGB's claim that Al Qaeda is terror "Comintern" (Hindustan Times, 12 October) is pure bullshit. It is yet unproven beyond doubt if such an organisation even exists today. There are doubts about the cassettes which pop up at opportune times on some Arab TV channels to serve American interests and needs. Many governments have tried to cash in on the American terrorism scare which in turn is serving Neocons wishing to take over world resources in the guise of crusade against terrorism. Russia is keeping many unwilling nations as slaves. These nations especially the Chechen have been fighting against Russian occupation for close to two centuries. It is time Russia reviewed its colonial policies and set free its unwilling citizens like it did to people on its western borders.

KGB story claims that Al-Zawahiri had three passports and the photograph accompanying the news item seems to support this. But, alas, this photograph has nothing to do with Zawahiri and it is not the photograph of a passport page in any case. It is a provisional certificate issued by the Engineering Faculty of Cairo University to a Sudanese national called Osama Ahmad Ali Abdur Rahman who passed BE in mechanical engineering in May 1985! Incidentally, I too studied in that university. We should be extra careful about the notorious KGB whose previous chief is now Russian president.
