Faisal award for Indian scholar
An Indian Muslim scholar has won the prestigious King Faisal award for Islamic studies this year. In what is an indication of the high standards of Indian Islamic scholarship a number of Indians have earlier won this world-class award and these include late Maulana Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi, Dr Nejatullah Siddiqui and Dr Mustafa Azami.
This year’s winner is Dr Ali Ahmad Nadwi who has been chosen for his contribution in the filed of Fiqhi rules for commercial transactions. His co-winner is the Saudi scholar Dr Yaqub al-Bahusain.
Dr Nadwi is a graduate of Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow who went for further studies to Saudi Arabia and got his MA and PhD in Fiqh from Shari’ah College of Umm Al-Qura Universtiy. He is the chief legal adviser to the Rajhi Banking Company for the last 13 years and has participated in many conferences and seminars in Saudi Arabia and other countries as well as writing on Fiqhi issues of contemporary commercial relevance.
