SAARC Legal fraternity Heads Towards  Karachi

South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation in Law (SAARCLAW), an offshoot of SAARC, is an Association of the legal communities of the SAARC countries comprising distinguished judges, senior lawyers, eminent jurists, noted academicians and prominent government officials. It has grown through nine major international conferences.

To follow up the SAARC Summit, the 10th SAARCLAW Conference on "Leap Forward - Next Generation Laws" is being hosted by the SAARCLAW - Pakistan Chapter in Karachi between 20-22 Feb. 2004. The Conference will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Mir Zafaraullah Khan Jamali and will be attended by Chief Justices, Judges, Jurists and Lawyers from all the SAARC Countries.

From India, a delegation of about 60 members of the legal fraternity is expected to attend the Conference. The delegation includes the Chief Justice of India, Justice VN Khare, Former Minorities Commission chair and renowned jurist Professor Tahir Mahmood, eminent Supreme Court lawyers KK Venugopal, Abhishek Singhvi and Rakesh Munjal, Justices UC Banerjee and Bashir A. Khan and Punjab Advocate-General, Harbhagwan Singh.

A significant and striking feature of the delegation is its committed youth participation with the budding entrepreneurial lawyer, Syed Saif Mahmood as its Protocol Convenor and the leading young corporate lawyer Hemant Batra as the Secretary -General.

The Conference is expected to deliberate upon issues relating to South Asian Free Trade, Women and Children in South Asia and Corporate Governance in the SAARC.
