Course on Islam Today
The third Refresher Course in Islamic Studies was conducted by the UGC Academic Staff College, AMU during 23 March-16 April, under the central theme of “Islam in a changing world”. During the three-week course forty-two lectures were delivered by learned experts from AMU, Jamia Millia Islamia, University of Allahabad, Darul Musannifin (Azamgarh) and Darul Ulum Tajul Masajid (Bhopal). All the lectures were arranged in the Department of Islamic Studies under the supervision of the course coordinators, Dr. Sayyid Ahsan and Dr. Zafarul Islam Islahi. Participants included lecturers of Islamic Studies from AMU and various universities and colleges of Kerala, Kashmir and Maharashtra.
Some of the important topics of the lectures were English translations of the Holy Quran, Modern trends in tafsir literature, Muslim Ummah in the present days, Islam and human welfare, Islam and globalization, Impact of Islam on the West, Sir Sayed as a social reformer, Development of Islamic movements in India, Relevance of Madarasa education to modern times, Medical significance of Islamic teachings, Role model of the Prophet (SAW) for contemporary minorities, Rights of non-Muslims in Islamic State, Jihad: its concept and conditions in Islam, Challenges and prospects for Muslims after 9/11, Islam and post–modernism, and Mass Media and image of Muslims.
These lectures were not only informative but also quite useful to understand Islam’s approach towards the socio-economic problems of the modern period and to perceive Muslim interests in the world today.«
