MUSHIRUL HASAN was appointed Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia by President APJ Abdul Kalam. He succeeds Syed Shahid Mahdi whose five-year term ended on 5 June. The youngest history professor of the country, Hasan has earlier served Jamia as pro-VC and also as officiating VC. At the time of appointment he was serving the university as Professor of Modern Indian History and Director of the Academy of Third World Studies. In 1992, Prof. Hasan had to face the ire of students community for his remarks on the government’s ban on Salman Rushdie’s controversial book, The Satanic Verses. Hasan had remarked, “everybody has the right to be heard and read.” Twelve years after that anger has subsided and his appointment has been welcomed. Moreover, there is no students union at present at the university. The outgoing VC Syed Mahdi was happy to hand over the charge to an able academician and administrator. Prof. Mohini Anjum took over as officiating VC on 6 June due to Hasan’s academic tour to Paris.
Rais Ahmad Siddiqui took over as Judicial magistrate of Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh on 3 June. New additional and sessions judges include Farooq Umar, Qazi Ghufran Ali (ST Act), AA Husaini and others. They took over charges on 8 June. These new appointments were made after transfer of officers.
Union cabinet minister for steel, fertilisers and chemicals and national president of Lok Janshakti Party, Ram Vilas Paswan nominated
KUNWAR ASIM KHAN as national president of the party’s youth wing, Yuva Lok Janshakti on 1 June. Paswan hoped that the Yuva Lok Janshakti would be strengthened under Kunwar Khan’s leadership. After nomination Khan said he would work to strengthen the party’s youth wing in states and in the country. Party activists and senior leaders have welcomed Khan’s appointment. SAMINA PARVIN, daughter of Anis Ahmad, a student of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Jogabai, New Delhi topped her school by an aggregate 71 percent marks in High School examinations. RASHIDA BI and CHAMPA DEVI SHUKLA who were awarded Goldman Environmental Prize for their tireless battle for justice for the victims of 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy announced on 25 May to donate their award money to a charitable trust for the welfare of gas disaster victims. The award money of Rs 56 lakh would be spent for medical assistance to children of gas exposed parents and for establishing income-generating projects for women survivors.
Congratulations Khalid!KUNWAR ASIM KHAN created a history by winning Andhra Kesery (Wrestling Championship) on 9 May. He is the first Muslim to achieve the title in the 35-year history of the championship. A disciple of Ustad Eisa of Barkas Bamas Akhada, Khalid defeated Yogesh Lal Yadav, a student of Lallu Ustad of Begum Bazaar. After clinching the title, Khalid thanked Allah and his friends for their encouragement and assistance. He was awarded a “Gada” (bludgeon) as a title. During the annual meeting of Dargah Committee of Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chishti,
MANSUR ALI LALLI was elected president whereas ABDUL QADIR WADIWALA was elected vice-president for the second term. There was a tug of war between members of the committee working under central Ministry of Social Justice about selection of president and vice-president. Finding an unfavourable situation for himself, former president Inayat Hussain presented the name of Prof. Akhtarul Wase, but Lalli Miyan succeeded in getting 6 out of the 9 votes of the members. A resident of Lucknow, Lalli Miyan had earlier remained vice-president of the committee. About six months ago, the BJP government had again made him member of the committee.
Congratulations to MUHAMMAD AIYUB on his outstanding performance. Muhammad Aiyub, a student of Alfalah Model School, Bhadas, Gurgaon got into Merit List by obtaining 100 percent marks in mathematics. He received 93 marks in English. RUHEL KHAN of same school also made it to Merit List by acquiring 81 percent marks, while MUHAMMAD AZAD, again of the same school stood second in the district in Board’s 8th class examination. All these students belong to Mewat region where only 15 percent men and a mere 5 percent women are literate.
Following a Supreme Court order for reduction in the ministry of Left Front, West Bengal food minister
KALIMUDDIN SHAMS and irrigation minister Amrinderlal Rai have resigned from their posts. Both the ministers have sent their resignations to chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. According to Left Front sources five ministers would be dropped under the ministry reduction plan. Besides Shams of Forward Bloc and Rai of RSP, three ministers of CPI (M) would also be dropped.
Rashtriya Janata Dal MP from Siwan, MUHAMMAD SHAHABUDDIN has been permitted by a fast-track court of Siwan to participate in the oath taking ceremony and parliamentary sessions. Known as Robin Hood of Bihar, Shahabuddin won his parliamentary seat after a re-poll. Special judge AP Srivastav accepted his request to shift Shahab to the local Sadar Hospital on health grounds. He has been kept in Siwan’s Mandal jail due to his alleged involvement in a number of cases.
